Activity: Finding a Blog

Go to google.com/blogsearch and find a blog post that you like. Try to search for specific things to find recent posts… so instead of searching for “Carolina Basketball” maybe search for “Carolina Clemson” to find analysis of last night’s game. To find a more recent post click “last day” or “last week” on the left hand side of the page.

Look at a bunch of different posts and blogs and try to find one that you would consider returning to regularly. Once you have decided on a post, copy and paste the following questions into the comment window on this post and answer them with a sentence or two each:

Name:

1. What did you search for to find this post?
2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?
3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?
4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?
5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?

    1. Fashion
    2. It talked about who is currently in and who is going out of style as well as styles to look for in the fall.
    3. The post's introduction is very personable. It talks in an informal voice and bonds over how sad it is that summer is almost over. The post hooks the reader by vaguely hinting about changes regarding designers.
    4. The layout is very inviting. There are pictures to go with each page to show an example, and the font isn't too flashy or too boring.
    5. The blogger conceives her audience to be interested in fashion, but not necessarily know all of the hotshot names. While the author describes the designers, there is information about them and their work, so people who haven't heard of them aren't completely clueless. The post is for anyone who wants to be current on fashion, not just insiders. The assumptions are true of me; I think fashion is really interesting and I love looking at new styles.

  2. 1. What did you search for to find this post?

    Olympics 2012

    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?

It had more pictures to look at and looked more interesting.

    3. What kind of introduction does the post have?
How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?

The introduction grabbed my attention from the beginning, questioning readers of whether there were "cult" references in the Olympics. They try to hook the reader by bringing up a question that most would not think about.

    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?

The blog's layout is inviting to me. It has leaves as the background and and sunset picture at the top. Even though these pictures are not very relevant to the subject of the blog, it still creates a home-like atmosphere.

    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?

The blog is for outsiders. The author assumes that the reader knows of the ceremonies during the Olympics and has an idea of what it looked like. These assumptions are true of me. I did watch some of the games and the closing ceremony.

    http://www.catscratchreader.com/2012/8/18/3251992/carolina-panthers-preseason-game-two-a-story-from-the-stands

    1. What did you search for to find this post?
I searched for “Carolina Panthers Preseason Game 2”

    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?
Most blog posts about football games are serious reflections on the previous afternoon or night’s game. This blog post, in contrast, offered a humorous look at the game from a perspective of someone in the stands.

    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?
The post begins by the author explicitly stating that this blog post is not a typical review of a game but rather his experience from the stands. He tries to hook the reader by implying this post will be a unique and lighthearted read in contrast to more serious reviews of the actual game.

    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?
The blog’s layout is simple, although advertisements clutter the side of the screen. Of course, this is to be expected. I had no trouble navigating the page.

    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?
The blogger assumes his audience are fans or at the very least followers of the Carolina Panthers. He makes references to certain players that fans but not necessarily outsiders would be familiar with. He assumes the reader has a grasp both on the current team’s situation as well as a bit about the history. This assumption is definitely true of me, since I am a lifetime Carolina Panthers fan.

    1. What did you search for to find this post?

    Southern Food Recipes

    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?

This one was colorful and hooked me on the first page with a picture of macaroni and cheese.

    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?

The blog does not necessarily have an introduction. Rather, there are a lot of pictures of her own cooking surrounding the page and recipes make up every inch of the formatting.

    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?

I think it is extremely inviting. It is very colorful and her titles of her posts are intriguing enough to make you want to click on the post.

    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?

This blogger conceives her audience to be outsiders. Most of her recipes are traditional Southern classics, but she feels the need to explain why they are classics. This is not true for me because I grew up eating Southern food my whole life.

    http://10000birds.com/
    1. What did you search for to find this post? “10000 birds” I already follow this blog weekly
    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at? 10000 birds tries to touch on the most diverse topics compared to most birding blogs, and isn’t as much a personal blog as it is a scientific resource. It includes tips and tricks to field identification of birds, plus such topics as conservation and relevant current events.
    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader? The post is introduced using a short funny sentence, and the reader is hooked when the author uses the first few sentences to create a relatable atmosphere.
    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating? I find the format very inviting, with a number of new posts showing up on the main page laced with stunning photographs of bird from all over the world.
    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you? When the authors of 10000 birds writes a post, it is definitely geared toward a person who knows a great deal about birds, is usually quite on the eco-friendly side, and is up to date on the newest in avian scientific breakthroughs. This is without a doubt an “insider” blog.

    1. What did you search for to find this post? studying abroad
    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at? It looked like it would have a lot of interesting and in-depth information, not just a few recommendations.
    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader? It asks a question and suggests that there will be an answer in the post.
    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating? I like it. It's very simple and easy to follow.
    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you? The post is designed for a specific audience- students who are thinking about studying abroad. The author assumes that the reader does not have much experience traveling abroad. I am hoping to study abroad and some of the tips were definitely helpful.

  7. 1. What did you search for to find this post?
I searched for "apologetics" to find this post. http://www.apologetics315.com/2012/08/how-to-get-apologetics-in-your-church-2_23.html
    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?
This post related a little more to me than the other posts did, because it mentioned a youth apologetics home group (since I'm still in the youth group at my church). The other posts didn't apply to me as much, such as the ones like "Were you a former atheist?"
    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?
The introduction seemed to be very welcoming. The writer introduces himself and mentions that he has children, perhaps to get on a relational level with the reader. He also uses positive connotative words such as "proud," "grace," and "mercy."
    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?
The blog's layout isn't necessarily inviting, but it isn't intimidating. It's relatively simple; a strip of black forms the top of the blog, and a white background with black text spans the rest.
    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?
The blogger assumes that the reader knows what the term "apologetics" means, and the information seems to be directed toward insiders and outsiders. Insiders are welcome because it will help them grow in their faith, and outsiders are welcome because they're given instruction on how to get started. The assumptions made in the blog post are true of me.

    1. What did you search for to find this post?
    1) I read this college football blog, Every Day Should Be Saturday, pretty much every day.
    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?
    2) This post is part of a series where the blogger, Spencer Hall, is helping his friend who is new to college football pick a team to root for. The series has been interesting so far, as it looks into the psyche of college football fans and their often deranged devotion to their teams.
    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?
    3) The writer hooks the reader by immediately jumping into the topic, which is the importance of a team's mascot when choosing to root for them.
    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?
    4) I like the blog's layout a lot, because the uniform layout of SB Nation (a collective of sports blogs) as a whole is very inviting
    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?
    5) While the post is about helping someone out who is new to college football, there is definitely an insider feel to it, as Hall makes a lot of references that someone who is uninformed about the game would not likely get. The author definitely assumes that even if the reader is not a college football fan, they are certainly a sports fan in general and can understand what it is like to be a devoted fan. These assumptions are definitely true of me.

    1. What did you search for to find this post?
I searched for movie reviews to find this post.
    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?
I chose this post because the reviews were very straightforward and gave the author's honest opinions on recent movies. It was also aesthetically pleasing.
    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?
The author tries to hook in his reader by giving a basic idea as to whether or not he liked the movie in the first sentence. He first gives his review and then goes further into what actually happens in the movie.
    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?
I find this blog layout to be very inviting because the analyses are short and easy enough to read on the homepage, but once you click further you can read the thoughts in depth. Also, the film posters are placed by each one to make it more pleasing to the eye.
    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?
This blog seems to be made for the anyone interested in movies. The posts help people decide whether or not they want to see the movie they are reading about. The author seems to assume the reader has no prior knowledge of the movies. It also could be for anyone who wants to see what someone else thought of a certain movie, particularly because the posts go into great detail and often give away much of the plot.

    1. What did you search for to find this post?

I searched for "lastest news on the Obama campaign.
    http://tampa.cbslocal.com/2012/08/21/obamas-campaign-speech-press-conference-in-the-white-house/#respond

    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?

I thought that this post was especially interesting because it chose to attack President Obama for his latest conference, vocalizing how he basically answered questions in all the wrong ways. I actually disagree with the writer's opinions.

    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?

The introduction grabs the reader by introducing the fact that Obama "finally" chose to do another press conference. Clearly the reader can assume that the writer does not have a strong liking about the way that the President is running his campaign, and the diction in the introduction makes that clear.

    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?

The layout is pretty neutral, however, it is somewhat inviting with its picture of Obama at a podium. The title grabs the reader's attention with the words "press conference" in quotations.

    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?

The writer's audience seems to be for those who are against Obama and the way that he goes about running his campaign.

  11. 1. I searched for "food politics" to find this post.
    2. I chose this post because it seemed to attack the topic from many different angles instead of being focused primarily on one aspect (health benefits, fda struggles, jobs in the food industry, etc). Others seemed to be geared mainly toward one factor. I also really liked the layout of the website and found it easier to navigate.
    3. Personally, I was captivated by the web design and vibrantly colored graphics at the top of the web page. To the right of the page, there are many different links to click on in order to read farther into a subject of interest related to food politics, which allows you to continue to delve into this blog with ease. The blog really has no introduction; the page starts with the writers most recent post. The title of the post is in a red, bold print which catches the attention of the reader and demands focus on the boldly worded titles.
    4. I found the web design very inviting and interesting.

    1. What did you search for to find this post?
I searched for "Alexander McQueen Blog" to try to find this post and ended up being compelled to read the "My visit to the Balenciaga Exhibit" post on the same blog (the blog itself is called John Painter's Blog)

    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?
The visual components of this post drew me into the subject material. The blogger juxtaposed concise writing with many photographs that attracted my attention.

    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?
The introduction to the post isn't flashy. Rather, the writer is direct in summarizing his recent visit to a Balenciaga exhibit. He does seem to hook his reader by stating a strong opinion (in favor) of this exhibit.

    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?
The layout is inviting because the blogger combines his writing and visual components well. However, it is somewhat intimidating that there are no page breaks within the blog.

    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?

This blog seems like it is more directed for insiders in the sense that it's a specific topic that only some people may be interested in. However, the blogger explains the exhibition well enough that one would not have to have visited the exhibition to understand the blog. The author assumes that the reader has some knowledge of the design house Balenciaga and its most famous dresses, like the "Infanta" evening dress. While I do have some knowledge of Balenciaga, I am by no means an expert.

    1. What did you search for to find this post?
I googled the 2012 presidential election.

    2. What made you choose this post rather than others you looked at?
I wanted to find a blog that actually discussed the prospective outcome of the election in relation to daily occurrences in the campaign.

    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader?
The posts begin by explaining the polling data available on each particular day. He is straightforward with the information and presents it in a seemingly unbiased way.

    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?
The blogs layout is very appealing and inviting. It is formatted with short paragraphs and bullet points with the occasional chart thrown in.

    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?
Since this blog is written on the New York Times website, it was meant for a large group of people particularly outsiders. The author assumes that the reader has knowledge of the election taking place this November and the candidates running.

  14. 1. I looked up 2012 London Summer Olympics.
    2. It had brief information about the London Olympics and the categories made it easier to read.
    3. The author starts by talking about the beginning of the Olympics. The writer writes simply which hooks readers who want a brief explanation of this year's Olympics.
    4. The blog has many subtitles, which make the blog easier and more inviting to read.
    5. This blog was written for anyone who wanted to look up information about the Olympics. The blog is filled with more facts than his own opinions. He assumes that whoever is reading his blog is a fan of the Olympics or just wanted to know more about it.

    3. What kind of introduction does the post have? How does the writer try to hook his or her reader? The introduction is very plain and simple, the post opened with a bold statement that the weekend could not have been more exciting.
    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating? The layout of the blog is pretty simple, and isn't really meant to be decorative.
    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you? The blogger definitely assumes the reader has at least some knowledge of soccer and the events that went on over the weekend as well as the events of the summer in the world of soccer.

-To find this post I searched "basketball blogs".

    4. What do you think of the blog’s layout? Is it inviting or intimidating?

    5. How does the blogger conceive of his or her audience? Is it for insiders or outsiders? What kinds of knowledge does the author assume of his or her reader? Are these assumptions true of you?
-The blogger knows that his audience knows about basketball, even if it is not much. The audience may also have interest in new recruits for college basketball. These assumptions were true of me because I do have interest in basketball and rising stars. Especially when they ruin an opportunity that only few have in life.
